Palo Santo

PALO SANTO

Although Palo Santo, from South America, was and continues to be used in spiritual ceremonies and rituals, don’t feel that you have to save it for a special occasion! This essential oil is loved by those who meditate, do yoga and by artists because it’s said to diminish negativity. You will feel calm, creative and focused when Palo Santo is near you.

Palo Santo, also known as “Holy Wood,” truly gives it’s all as the oil is collected from only old dead wood that has died a natural death. Some of the wood is used to create incense to ward off tiny outdoor nuisances.  Some of the wood is cut into small pieces for cleansing and ceremonies.  But some of the wood is used to create this calming essential oil that smells slightly of licorice and citrus.  After several years of lying on the forest floor decomposing, the essential oil forms and the wood gives a high yield through steam distillation.

This essential oil does indeed seem to be an “old soul” because it has all the answers. It can be helpful for bumps, wounds, muscle, and joint discomfort and of course emotional distress and uneasiness. It also addresses seasonal threats as well. Due to its superior absorption ability, it’s wonderful in a massage blend to help with soreness. When diluting it would go along with some carrier oils that also absorb well such as Almond, Grapeseed, or Sunflower.

Palo Santo is rich in limonene, which is supportive to the immune system. It also helps with discomfort and swelling.  Enjoy this relative of Frankincense and Myrrh in a relaxing bath salt or in a meditation blend.

Here is a blend for reflecting, yoga or quiet time;

3 drops Vetiver

THIEVES - warm and spice and everything nice - that’s what the Thieves essential oil blend is made of.

Legend says that in France during the 15th century, thieves would sneak into graveyards to rob from the dead and dying. You’ll adore its ability to purify the air, take advantage of its topical cleansing properties, and fall in love with its cozy and comforting aroma.

Bergamot

Bergamot is a multi-dimensional oil and packs a lot of punch! It has a clean and fruity fragrance. It is unique among it’s citrus siblings, due to it’s ability to be both uplifting and calming. Linalool acts in a number of beneficial ways on the human body. It has been used as a natural soporific, anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic, and topical skin application for millennia. Insomniacs of the Renaissance kept parcels of lavender under their pillows, and it is still used for scar treatment today.

Shower Scrub DIY:

One of my favorite ways to treat my skin is to make a shower scrub. This coffee scrub will definitely wake you up and get you off to a great start in the morning while helping nearly any skin issues you might be having: acne, eczema, or patchy dry skin.

Mix Together:

1 cup ground coffee

¼ cup jojoba/coconut/olive oil

10 drops Bergamot

*Optional: Add in 5 drops tea tree oil or peppermint oil for extra ZING!

Directions: Stand in the shower and rub this all over your body – excluding your face. Make sure that you focus on any troubling areas, and exfoliate generously. Turn on your shower, rinse and wash as you normally would.

Research Studies:

Forty healthy volunteers participated in an experiment where blended essential oils (lavender and Bergamot) were applied topically to their abdomens. Compared with placebo, the blended essential oils caused significant decreases of pulse rate, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure, which indicated a decrease of autonomic arousal. At the emotional level, subjects in the blended essential oil group rated themselves as 'more calm' and 'more relaxed' than subjects in the control group. This finding suggests a decrease of subjective behavioral arousal and provides evidence for its use in medicine for treating depression or anxiety in humans. (Study: 2011, Srinakharinwirot University – Thailand)

Cancer research has continued to provide evidence that essential oils can help prevent and treat cancer. Chemoprevention is defined as the use of natural, synthetic, or biologic chemical agents to reverse, suppress, or prevent carcinogenic progression to invasive cancer. Some dietary factors affect cell signaling pathways in ways that inhibit carcinogenesis, including those that are found in essential oils containing Limonene. These oils (such as Bergamot) demonstrate chemopreventive effects in either animal or human cancer cell lines. (Study: 2006, Aggarwal & Shishodia)

Safety Tips:

As with any citrus oil, avoid direct sunlight or UV rays for 12 hours after applying. If you have skin sensitivities dilute with a carrier oil before applying topically. If you are nursing or pregnant consult a physician before starting essential oils.
